A beloved TV game show looks to be making a comeback, with Britain’s Radio Times reporting that reality show producer Freemantle (which has brought us such shows as “American Idol” and “America’s Got Talent”) has purchased the rights to the Brit hit “Supermarket Sweep”.

The show was originally created by American game show producer Al Howard in 1965, and went on to spawn 13 different international versions throughout the world.

In its successful U.K. incarnation, the show was hosted by Dale Winton, aired from 1992 to 2001 on ITV, and was briefly revived in 2007. At this stage, Freemantle hasn’t revealed which U.K. channel will air the new version.

In “Supermarket Sweep”, contestants competed in trivia quizzes and solved puzzles in order to win cash prizes before finally taking a mad dash through the aisles of a faux supermarket in search of hidden items as the clock ticked down.

According to Vasha Wallace, FreemantleMedia’s executive vice president of global acquisitions and development, the new version will be bolstered by some technological advances.

“Modern technology allows us the opportunity to update the show, making it relevant for a 21st century audience,” she said.

“The time is ripe to bring back this all-time favourite game show which has travelled with such success over the years,” added Wallace.

As Radio Times reports, there is no word yet on whether Dale Winton will return as host, or whether Freemantle is also prepping a version for American television.

Meanwhile, Freemantle’s announcement was music to fans’ ears, who took to Twitter to share their excitement about the return of “Supermarket Sweep”.
