Chalk off “being a grandfather” as Wayne Gretzky’s latest passion.
“It’s really amazing,” Gretzky tells ET Canada at the fundraiser for Parachute, a children’s safety charity in Toronto.
The Hockey Hall of Famer is enjoying his grandparent status with his wife Janet, to his infant grandson Tatum: “The little guy, he slept in between us the last five nights. It’s really special.”
Gretzky says that Tatum has become the welcomed centre of attention since being born in January to his daughter Paulina. It’s even caused some friendly competition with his son-in-law, pro golfer Dustin Johnson: “We were having a chat the other day and I said ‘I’m going to get him skates before you get him a golf club.’ So we’re already debating, because… I think he’s going to be an athlete.”
“Not trying to put pressure on him,” adds Gretzky, joking.
As for Paulina, he says she really seems to enjoy being a new mother. “I think it’s been really something wonderful for Paulina,” he says. “I’m really proud of her.”
