As one of the top designers for women on-and-off the red carpet, Michael Kors has continued to use his fashion designs for good.
In a Canadian exclusive, ET Canada’s Cheryl Hickey sits down with the 58-year-old fashion designer who opens up about his latest philanthropic effort with “Watch Hunger Stop”, a campaign he created in support of the United Nations World Food Programme.

As part of the campaign, fans of the designer are encouraged to share a selfie with his specially designed t-shirt and the hashtag #WatchHungerStop. Explaining the concept, Kors says, “In this instance, every time you post something, we’re donating 50 meals.”
The New York-based designer has also partnered with actress Kate Hudson, who headed to Cambodia with the WFP this past June to see how meals were being implemented in their supported schools. “I knew she’d be so great to be someone we can partner with in getting the message out there and she’s been remarkable,” says Kors.

With celebrity clients like Angelina Jolie and even Duchess Kate, Kors attributes much of his early success to growing up in a family who simply loved clothes. “I grew up in a family of fashionistas,” he says. “My mom modelled, my grandfather was in the textile business, I had an uncle who was a manufacturer […] everyone was just obsessed with clothes.”
Kors also recalls one of his former jobs in his late teens where he designed clothing for a boutique in New York and even dressed Hudson’s mom. “We were just in the right place at the right time,” he explains. “So everyone from Goldie Hawn to Diana Ross to Jackie Kennedy, they were all clients.”

While the fashion designer’s A-list of clientele has continued to expand, Kors discloses the one person he would love to dress. “Queen Elizabeth II,” he says. “I think she really understands herself well. I mean, think about the idea of consistency, knowing your body, knowing your position. She knows all of that. And I have to take my hat off to her.”
