Jonathan Rhys Meyers has broken his silence following the Daily Mail“s publication of some shocking photos in which the Dracula star looks dazed and disheveled, and appears to be drinking vodka out of a bottle while walking down a London street.
The actor has had a long and very public struggle with the bottle, and in a statement put out on the Instagram page of girlfriend Mara Lane he describes his apparent relapse as a “blip”; on the road to recovery, and insists his drinking had nothing to do with his non-appearance at Cannes to promote his upcoming film Damascus Cover.
“Mara and I are thankful for your support and kindness during this time. I apologizes [sic] for having a minor relapse and hope that people don’t think too badly of me,”; writes the actor, who has several stints in rehab under his belt and reportedly had his Dracula salary held until completion of filming over fears he would suffer a relapse.
After the pictures were published, he writes, he immediately stopped drinking and continues to focus on his sobriety. “I stopped drinking immediately,”; he writes, “and it is no reflection on Damascus Cover as I was not meant to attend Cannes this year and I apologize to fans and colleagues.”;
In addition, the former Tudors star explains his shambolic appearance was simply the result of being caught at a bad moment, returning home in the morning after being with friends the previous night.
“I am on the mend and thank well wishers and sorry for my disheveled appearance as I was on my way home from a friends and had not changed,”; he continues. “I feel I made a mistake and feel quite embarrassed but this was just a blip in my recovery otherwise I’m living a healthy life.”;
