Kelly Clarkson Says She’s ‘Not Mad’ About The Time Avril Lavigne Elbowed Her In The Face

By Corey Atad.

Kelly Clarkson doesn’t hold a grudge. At least not when it comes to Avril Lavigne.

The “American Idol” winner was on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show on Wednesday morning, talking about how her reality-show roots may have made other artists feel she hadn’t paid her dues.

“I got elbowed in the face by someone I was giving an award to at the VMAs,” Clarkson said.

Stern asked if she was talking about the notorious incident at the 2002 VMAs, when Lavigne allegedly elbowed Clarkson in the face while being handed an award.

“It was her,” Clarkson said. “But I will say this: Years later I saw her and she said, ‘Oh my gosh, people keep saying I elbowed you in the face and I’m so sorry!’ And I don’t know… she did it… but I don’t know if she felt bad about it, or she didn’t mean to do it, or what… but it felt purposeful!”

“I think what I was bummed about is I’m a fan of hers,” Clarkson added. “I loved her music.”

But it’s all water under the bridge now. Clarkson pointed out that Lavigne even co-wrote one of her biggest hits: “Breakaway”.

“She did apologize. So I will say that,” Clarkson said. “Honestly, I’m still a fan. I’m not mad at it.”
