Numerous sources are reporting that “Suits” will be losing two of its stars when the legal drama returns for an eighth season, with Us Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter and other media outlets claiming that Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams are set to exit the show.
Under normal circumstances, reports of a star leaving a TV series would only be of interest to that show’s viewers; not every show, however, features a cast including a woman who’s dating Prince Harry, and as engagement rumours swirl she appears to be on track to become the latest member of the royal family.
“He was always leaving the show. He made his mind up a while ago,” an insider tells Us Weekly of Adams, who plays bad-boy lawyer Mike Ross on the series.
“Patrick wants to pursue other things and he’s realized his time at ‘Suits’ has come to an end. They were waiting for Gabriel Macht to sign. He’s going back so there will be a season eight and as of now, nine.”
The source adds that the upcoming wedding between Mike and Markle’s character, paralegal-turned-lawyer Rachel Zane, will serve as an organic way to say goodbye to both characters, and “will make it an easy break for Meghan to leave as well.”
Meanwhile, many had already assumed that Markle would be leaving prior to season eight, as rumours heat up of a forthcoming engagement followed by a royal wedding.
“If Meghan decides not to come back for season eight, the show will still keep going, if everyone else signs on,” a “Suits” insider told Us Weekly last month. “She isn’t the main cast member on the show, and quite frankly, everyone already thinks she’s not coming back.”
ET Canada reached out to the USA Network, who declined to comment. However a source tells us discussions are currently underway.
