While Netflix continues to ramp up its original programming to compete with TV networks and cable outlets, it seems the online streaming service also plans to become a competitor with your local multiplex, and will go head to head with movie theatres by producing Netflix original films boasting A-list talent.
Following last year’s deal with Adam Sandler to star in four movies to debut on Netflix, the latest star to jump aboard is Brad Pitt.
As reported by Deadline, Pitt will bring his latest flick, War Machine, to Netflix in a deal described as a “game changer,” with Netflix landing exclusive distribution rights to the film.
“This will be the biggest investment Netflix will have made so far in a feature film, in the $30 million range,” notes Deadline. “It is also the first time Netflix has really gotten hold of a film with one of the biggest global A-list movie stars, in his prime.”
Directed by David Michod, War Machine finds Pitt starring as a “four-star rock star U.S. military general”; in a “satirical comedy” inspired by the bestseller The Operators: The Wild And Terrifying Inside Story Of America’s War In Afghanistan.
“War Machine is a rip-roaring, behind-the-facade tale of modern war decision-makers, from the corridors of power to the distant regions of America’s ambitions,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer of Netflix. “Brad and David are a perfect team to make this timely, compelling and entertaining film.”
“We are so excited to be a part of the inspiring commitment by Netflix to produce cutting-edge content and to deliver it to a global audience,” added Pitt in a statement.
