Ed Sheeran sat down for an interview with Beats 1’s Julie Adenuga for a wide-ranging interview touching on everything from his massive stardom to his dream collaborations to how he keeps an eye on his weight.
Asked about being “the biggest star in the world,” Sheeran admits, “Yeah, I feel awkward with that. It’s proper weird… It’s good Adele didn’t release an album, innit?”
Following on his recent collaboration with Beyonce on a remix of “Perfect”, Sheeran also discusses working with Eminem on his upcoming “Revival” LP, and explains how he envisions a future collaboration with the rapper.
“I think I’d do two different songs with him and choose one of them,” says Sheeran of how he’d work with Eminem in the future. “One of them would be like an introspective story telling thing like ‘Stan’ and one of them would be like — you know when he used to joke rap… like in the shower this morning, I was doing ‘I murder a rhyme, one word at a time/You never heard of a mind as perverted as mine.'”
And while he doesn’t feel he’s a great rapper, he loves doing it — although he doesn’t see himself trading verses with Slim Shady anytime soon.
“I don’t feel like anyone thinks I can rap, but I really enjoy doing it so — f**k you!” he jokes. “I really enjoy doing it, but in that aspect I wouldn’t because you’d be going against one of the greatest rappers in all time, so I’d stick to what I was good at. Like, I rap on my own stuff because I enjoy doing it. That’s something that I’d definitely put together in the future. I think someone like Drake would be really fun to work with. I’d want him to rap though because I love it when he raps, when he’s barring.”
Sheeran also discusses his weight, revealing the surprising device that helped him slim down. “I bought a George Foreman Grill ’cause I got made fat!” says Sheeran. “I got super fat right so the end of 2015, but I’m getting back to that stage now because I’ve spent the whole year working. I was in India and I’d wake up, have a curry and beer for lunch and for dinner I’d have a curry and beer.”
Noting that he gained a “stone and a half” (21 pounds) in a month, Sheeran admits, “I don’t know if I care, though. The mistake was the first time I bought jeans with elastic, that was the mistake. It just slowly started happening and sometimes my clothes actually do shrink in the wash and it’s like, ‘Ahhh yeah, this has shrunk.’”
