A new popularity poll shows that people prefer the much-maligned Jar Jar Binks to main characters from the new “Star Wars” movies.
Morning Consult polled 2,200 readers on their favourite characters from the hit sci-fi franchise, which returns to theatres next week with “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”.
The poll asked people for their opinions on 25 of the major characters from the intergalactic saga. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Princess Leia topped the poll with a whopping 73 per cent favourability rating, closely followed by the likes of Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, Yoda and R2-D2.

Old school villains such as Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt also rated respectably, sitting in the middle of the table within the 42 to 49 per cent range. But it was towards the bottom of the poll where things took a more interesting turn.
Not a single character from the new trilogy broke the 40 per cent favourability mark. That includes John Boyega’s Finn (39 per cent) and Daisy Ridley’s Rey (38 per cent), the lead stars of “The Force Awakens” and their lovable droid sidekick BB-8 (39 per cent).
But things fared even worse for the new bad guys on the block. Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren polled in at 32 per cent, that’s 5 per cent lower than the once hated Jar Jar Binks.
However, it’s Supreme Leader Snoke who has the honour of being the least popular “Star Wars” character of all – or at least, of the 25 on offer. Snoke is the leader of the First Order in the new trilogy, a CGI character voiced and performed by Andy Serkis.

Morning Consult also asked readers their favourite movies in the series, and the original trilogy finished comfortably at the top. “A New Hope”, “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” all returned scores of 94 per cent from those polled.
Congratulations to Jar Jar on no longer being the most hated person (alien) in the galaxy!
