Get ready to ride out to the danger zone one more time — the producer of a 30-years-later sequel to Top Gun claims that Tom Cruise is ready to reprise one of his most iconic roles in Top Gun 2.

Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison made the claim in an interview with Collider, noting that a screenplay is in the works for a sequel that would explore the realities of being a jet fighter in today’s era of fast-changing technology and drone warfare.

“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters,”; Ellison told Collider. “It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”;

But is it possible to do a Top Gun sequel without the original’s iconic star? Ellison doesn’t think so, and hints that fans may see Tom Cruise playing Maverick one more time.

“There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick,”; he hints, adding, “it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”;

ET Canada has reached out to Tom Cruise’s rep to confirm he’ll dust off that leather bomber jacket one more time, but has yet to receive a response.
