Jimmy Kimmel Brings Son Billy Along For His Late Night Return, Tears Up While Railing Against CHIP Defunding

Jimmy Kimmel returned to his late night hosting gig on Monday — with an adorable sidekick in tow!

Kimmel — who took a leave last week to be with his family as his 7-month-old son, Billy, underwent his second heart surgery — brought his adorable baby boy along with him for part of his monologue on Monday’s show.

“He’s fine, everybody! He may have pooped, but he’s fine,” the late night host joked as he thanked the celeb friends who filled in for him last week — Chris Pratt, Tracee Ellis Ross, Melissa McCarthy and Neil Patrick Harris — before growing emotional. “Daddy cries on TV, but Billy doesn’t. It’s unbelievable.”

Kimmel teared up as he spoke about his son’s surgery, and then took the opportunity to urge his viewers to contact their congressional representatives about renewing CHIP, the Children’s Health Insurance Plan, which provides healthcare coverage to children whose families don’t qualify for Medicaid and don’t receive other benefits.

“Parents of children with cancer, diabetes and heart problems are about to get letters saying their coverage may be cut off next month. Merry Christmas, right?” he said, railing on Congress for making children’s healthcare a partisan issue. “Imagine getting that letter, literally not knowing how you’ll be able to afford to save your child’s life. This is not a hypothetical — about two million CHIP kids have serious chronic conditions. I don’t know about you, [but] I’ve had enough of this. I don’t know what could be more disgusting than putting a tax cut that mostly goes to rich people ahead of the lives of children.”

As for Billy, Kimmel said that his son is going to be just fine, joking, “he’s probably on track to win at least a bronze medal in the Olympics in 2036.”
