From Shania Twain to Kendrick Lamar, we’re counting down our favourite songs of the year.
25. ‘Life’s About To Get Good’ Shania Twain
Shania Twain’s comeback song was everything we wanted to hear from her – an upbeat pop-country song with Twain being optimistic about life.
24. “One Last Song” Sam Smith
His first single this year, “Too Good At Goodbyes” covered too much familiar territory. “One Last Song” went for something different with its Motown sound with a scathing kiss-off to an ex.
23. ‘Passionfruit’ Drake
This track from Drake’s album, “More Life”, definitely has the same feel of “One Dance”, but that’s a good thing. It was never really pushed as a single, but it became a word of mouth hit.
22. ‘Versace On The Floor’ Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars slowed things down with the third single from “24k Magic” and it reminded us all of early ’90s Boyz II Men.
21. ‘May I Have This Dance’ Francis & The Lights feat. Chance The Rapper
Sure, this is a solid song from Francis & The Lights, doing a bang-on ode to Phil Collins, but it’s Chance’s unexpected dance routine in the video that really makes this soar.
20. ‘You Already Know’ Fergie feat. Nicki Minaj
Probably the most underrated pop song of the year. It deserved to be a big hit, but unfortunately, no one really paid attention. It samples “It Takes Two” and the two ladies bring more energy to this than most of what we heard in pop music this year.
19. ‘Stay’ Zedd feat. Alessia Cara
This song stuck around all year, and has now grabbed a Grammy nod. It’s unconventional in its sparseness, and Alessia Cara’s vocals really shine through.
18. ‘Either Way’ Chris Stapleton
This is a solidly-written song, but what makes this really stand out is Chris Stapleton’s insanely good vocals. Those notes!
17. ‘Drew Barrymore’ SZA
We’ve heard lots of songs of singers feeling insecure, but SZA does it in a very clever way, including a nod to one of the sweetest celebrities.
16. ‘Thunder’ Imagine Dragons
We easily could have put “Believer” on here instead, but we went with the Dragons’ slightly-catchier rock anthem.
15. ‘Rainbow’ Kesha
There’s several standout tracks on Kesha’s album, but we went with the title track featuring a soaring choir accompaniment.
14. ‘4:44’ JAY-Z
The album was JAY-Z’s surprisingly honest response to Beyonce’s “Lemonade” album, and it didn’t get any more honest than on the title track with JAY-Z begging for forgiveness from his wife for cheating.
13. ‘Love So Soft’ Kelly Clarkson
Fifteen years into her career, Kelly Clarkson was ready to change it up with a more soulful sound, and man, this first single nailed it. While a lot of pop stars were in sombre moods in 2017, Kelly Clarkson’s track arrived like a breath of fresh air.
12. ‘What About Us’ Pink
This song was a bit of a grower, but its powerful lyrics really became an anthem for everyone, and Pink sounds great on it.
11. ‘New Rules’ Dua Lipa
This song really took off because of its clever video, but we can’t dismiss the cleverness of the song either.
10. ‘Green Light’ Lorde
This is a love it or hate it track, and it definitely took a few listens to get into, but Lorde really took a risk and it worked.
9. ‘Slide’ Calvin Harris feat. Frank Ocean Snd Migos
Calvin Harris left behind the hardcore EDM for a more relaxed R&B vibe to his music and it paid off. Adding Frank Ocean to the groovy track was one we jammed to all summer.
8. ‘Bad Liar’ Selena Gomez
Sure, Selena Gomez is basically talking her away through this song, but the production of this track is outstanding. It’s sparse, direct and fun.
7. ‘Sign Of The Times’ Harry Styles
Harry Styles went bold with his solo debut. He channelled David Bowie for the nearly 6-minute rock track. Definitely not what One Direction fans were expecting, but Styles showed he truly wants to be an artist.
6. ‘Symphony’ Clean Bandit feat. Zara Larsson
A powerful video with a relationship we don’t often see represented in music videos helps elevate this song, but Zara Larsson also sounds great on the track that manages to be a dance song and a power ballad at the same time.
5. ‘Havana’ Camila Cabello
Spanish-infused music took over in 2017, and Camila Cabello capitalized on it big time with the help of Pharrell Williams. The insanely catchy track got everyone moving their hips this year.
4. ‘Want You Back’ Haim
This is one of the most entertaining videos of the year, and it’s so simple. The sister trio fully embraced the ’80s sound and they’ve never sounded better.
3. ‘American Teen’ Khalid
Speaking of an ’80s touch, Khalid adds just a bit of it to his R&B sound, and that unique addition helped him break out in 2017. You easily could have gone with several tracks from his debut album, but this one sounds like nothing else we heard this year.
2. ‘Humble’ Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar got his first solo #1 with this insanely catchy hook that also had him asking women to ditch the Photoshop. It was his most pop-leaning song ever and listeners took notice.
1. ‘Tin Man’ Miranda Lambert
We all wanted to hear about Miranda Lambert’s divorce from Blake Shelton, but she didn’t speak publicly about it. She instead poured it all into her music, and it produced this devastatingly beautiful track about heartbreak, that’s also incredibly clever with its connection to “The Wizard Of Oz”. There wasn’t a better-written song this year, with just a guitar accompanying her, Lambert’s voice pierces the heart.
