Iconic filmmaker Ridley is struggling to understand why “Blade Runner 2049” performed so poorly at the box office.

The film, starring leading man Ryan Gosling, was directed by Canadian Dennis Villeneuve (“Arrival”, “Sicario”) and enjoyed praise from critics. Thus far, however, the movie has only generated $258.2 million worldwide against a budget of roughly $160 million.

“I’m still digesting it,” Scott recently told Yahoo! Entertainment. “It had the best [reviews] of my life. I never had a movie welcomed like that. At the same time, the box office in the United States was a disappointment, that’s the truth because those movies are expensive. It will still make tons of money but not enough.”

Scott, 80, does have theories regarding the performance of “Blade Runner 2049”. “The thing I think is that it was maybe because people were not familiar enough with the universe,” continued Scott. “And the fact the movie is long. I don’t know, it’s still a mystery to me.”

It has been a tough year for Scott at the box office with “Blade Runner 2049” and “Alien: Covenant” both failing to rake in the dough despite positive reviews.

The famed filmmaker still has a chance to produce something audiences will eat up with “All the Money in the World”, in theatres now.
