The Archie Comics universe is expanding. Former “Mad Men” actress Kiernan Shipka has landed the coveted title role as Sabrina Spellman – better known as Sabrina The Teenage Witch – in a new Netflix series.

The new original series will follow the “Archie Horror” graphic novel “The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina”. The dark coming-of-age story will see Sabrina wrestle with her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal and will bear little resemblance to the 1996 to 2003 sitcom with Melissa Joan Hart as Sabrina.

Originally developed by The CW as a companion to “Riverdale”,  Netflix has signed a two-season deal for the series.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who penned the original graphic novel, will write and executive produce the series.

“We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list,” Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement. “This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
