Justin Timberlake treated fans to a rather bizarre listening party ahead of the release of his eagerly anticipated new album Man of the Woods on February 2.
The 36-year-old wanted to make it clear he thinks his latest LP has more of an outdoor vibe than an indoor one, so he decorated a New York City venue with bushes and trees on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week while feeding guests ants and grasshoppers.
Music industry insiders, members of the press and American Express cardholders were among the lucky attendees at the event, and were sure to take to social media to gush over how fabulous the singer was, despite the meet-and-greet being in rather unusual surroundings.
Despite Timberlake, who attended the party with his wife Jessica Biel, not going down this musical path before, he insisted he hasn’t strayed too much from his usual style.
He told those at the listening: “I’m not going to go all Ray LaMontagne,” while referencing the singer/songwriter, who is known for his folk sound.
Timberlake recently released a behind-the-scenes look at the making of his new album, telling fans in the clip: “I think the album has a wide range of sonics to it. But I guess I would describe it as ‘modern Americana’ with 808s…”
He added of the unusual mix of sounds, “We talk about those Southern guitars and that sound that feels like heritage – that is me exercising my love for where I came from. But then you mix it with something modern that’s just like where we are today. To me, if you can put those two things together, that’s just an equation for life.”
