Russell Brand is reaching out to his devoted fan base to give Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the wedding present he thinks they deserve.
The British comedian started an online petition on Thursday, aiming to give the gift of “love for the homeless” ahead of the royal nuptials.
Brand is asking members of the public to sign their name to his Change.org petition in the hopes of funding a homeless assistance facility in the town of Slough.“[Slough Homeless Our Concern] themselves are now being made homeless by Slough council,” Brand wrote. “Meaning the vulnerable clients that depend on them will be in even more trouble. But we can fight back on their behalf with the Recovery Movement.”
Brand’s petition comes after British councillor Simon Dudley called for the removal of all homeless people ahead of Prince Harry and Markle’s wedding on May 19. Thus far, 15,000 people have supported Brand’s call to convert a building into a new shelter run by SHOC.
“Many of the rough sleepers swept out of Windsor as result of Councillor Simon Dudley’s proposed economic cleanse in preparation of Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle will need SHOC and other local facilities to care for them,” Brand pointed out. “As a wedding present for Harry and Meghan and as a rebuke to the low frequency conduct of Councillor Dudley and any who would further victimise the vulnerable, we are asking that Slough Council agree to a ‘change of use’ for a building in the town that will enable SHOC to have a new home.”
He continued, noting that “this is the perfect way to ensure that love and community trump selfishness and profit as well as being the perfect wedding present for a cool couple.
“Let’s face it, what else can we give them? They must have enough toasters,” Brand concluded.
