Football fans who tuned in to watch Sunday’s AFC championship game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New England Patriots received an unexpected surprise: John Malkovich.

The “Being John Malkovich” star appeared in a delightfully twisted game-opening intro segment that managed to be both clever and meta as Malkovich — much like viewers — wondered what he was doing there.

Speaking with producers on his cellphone, Malkovich questions producers about why he’s preparing a 15-page monologue for what he’s been told is “a simple two-minute spot for the AFC championship” — which apparently requires a full orchestra.

When he receives the suggestion that he should talk to the director, Malkovich snarks back, “Oh, go talk to the director. That’s an astonishingly original idea, why didn’t I think of that? Thank goodness I have an agent…”

When he finally does meet the director, the actor discovers he’s not shooting a commercial, but a “tease” that will entice viewers to tune in.

“But if they see this aren’t they already watching?” he asks. “So what are we teasing?”
