Rosie O’Donnell clearly thought she was making an amusing observation when she took to Twitter to comment on a TV screengrab of Senator Chuck Schumer, singling out the woman sitting behind him.
“Who is that woman,” asked O’Donnell, “and why is she always frowning?”
“That woman” is Washington state Senator Patty Murray, who is not only the third-ranking Democrat in the Senate, but also holds the distinction of being Washington’s first female U.S. senator.
While many of O’Donnell’s Twitter followers took her to task for her ignorance of Murray and her standing in the Senate, many more schooled her for a remark that appeared to be sexist by implying that a woman should always have a smile on her face.
For her part, O’Donnell, 55, took the criticism to heart — and tweeted that she’ll now be making a donation to Murray in advance of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
