Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, responding to criticism over the lack of female representation at the ceremony, said that women needed to “step up” to be considered at the Grammys.

Tweeting in response, Azalea said the comments had her “heated.”

The 27-year-old rapper suggested that perhaps women should boycott the Grammys next year rather than wear white roses on the red carpet.

Singer Sheryl Crow also reacted to Portnow’s comments on Twitter, calling the remarks “insensitive.”
