Don Lemon returned to CNN Tuesday night after taking some time off following the tragic death of his older sister L’Tanya “Leisa” Lemon Grimes last week.
Lemon, 51, told viewers: “First off, many of you have noticed that I have not been here. My older sister died unexpectedly last week and I am back sitting with you tonight because this is exactly where she would have wanted me to be.
“Leisa was so proud of me, and all she wanted for Christmas last year was a new ‘CNN Tonight’ T-shirt.”
The CNN anchor’s appearance comes after he took to Twitter to mourn on Thursday following the news that his 58-year-old sister had died on Wednesday after falling into a pond and drowning while she was fishing in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.
“The Lemon/Grimes family would like to thank everyone for their condolences and prayers at this time. Our family has suffered the tragic loss of L’Tanya ‘Leisa’ Lemon Grimes and we are leaning on each other for strength at this time. We appreciate privacy as we grieve the loss of our loved one,” Lemon’s family said in a statement to the Times-Picayune.
“Thanks everyone for your words of sympathy,” Lemon wrote on Twitter. “Please keep my family in your prayers. Leisa was my oldest sister & partner in crime growing up. Always had my back. #RIPbigSis.”
Lemon also retweeted a video earlier in the day of kids talking about Black History Month while pretending to be a CNN panel, writing, “This lifted my spirits. I needed this today. Thank you @EuniqueJG!! #BlackHistoryMonth”
