Speculation has been rife that Janet Jackson will be making a surprise guest appearance alongside Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl on Sunday, following the “Rhythm Nation” singer’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction” (and ensuing FCC fine) when JT guested during her halftime show performance in 2004.
Jackson, however has declared she won’t be taking to the stage in Minneapolis at halftime, issuing a Tweet to “put to rest any speculation or rumours as to whether I will be performing at the Super Bowl… I will not.”
Jackson’s outright denial, however, didn’t prevent a fan named Matthew Cherry from suggesting that everyone pay tribute to Jackson by using the hashtag #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay on Super Bowl Sunday.
The notion quickly caught on, so much so that the hashtag actually began trending on Twitter. In fact, at the time of writing, #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay is trending second only to #SuperBowl.
Among those who helped get the hashtag to trend have been CNN political analyst April Ryan, comedian Loni Love, “Orange Is the New Black” star Laverne Cox and Chance the Rapper. Check out this sampling of Twitter love for Jackson:
