David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are heading to a galaxy far, far away.
With filming for the eighth and final season of their Emmy Award-winning HBO series coming to a close, the “Game of Thrones” creators are turning their sights towards the “Star Wars” universe with a new series of films.
On Tuesday, Disney revealed that the talented Benioff and Weiss would be writing and producing the new set of movies, which would be “separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga” and the “trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson.”
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground.”
Addressing the news in a joint statement, Benioff and Weiss said, “In the summer of 1977, we travelled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since.”
They added, “We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ is complete.”
There are currently no release dates set for the new films.
