The majority of the world may be excited to see Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tie the knot on May 19, but John Oliver is not looking forward to it in the slightest.
The 40-year-old was quizzed about the royal wedding during an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”. Just like Harry, 33, Oliver is also a Brit who married an American woman.
However, despite being told by the talk show host that he “must” be excited for the upcoming celebrations, Oliver insisted: “No. I would not blame her if she pulled out of this at the last minute.
“I don’t think you need to have just seen the pilot episode of ‘The Crown’ to get a basic sense she might be marrying into a family that could cause some emotional complications.”
Colbert then said that the current Royal Family are okay, to which Oliver replied: “Err.. yeah. They’re an emotionally stunted group of fundamentally flawed people doing a very silly pseudo-job. That’s what she’s marrying into. I hope she likes it, it’s going to be weird for her.
“I would not marry someone in the Royal Family. I’m a commoner, I would not be welcome, especially after what I’ve just said.”
Oliver’s chat also saw him call knighthoods “strange” due to the recipient having to kneel in front of the Queen.
The star insisted, “It’s an odd thing to still have.”
