Universal Pictures will provide funding for “extra security” during screenings of Straight Outta Compton, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
“The studio has not solicited enhanced security for theaters who will begin showing it this weekend, but has partnered with those exhibitors who have requested support for their locations,”; a spokesperson for Universal said publicly.
In the past, studios have taken similar precautions when movies (Boyz n the Hood, Notorious) with gang-related themes opened in theatres. The decision, however, is delicate timing as it come three weeks after two people were shot dead during a screening of Trainwreck in Tennessee.
According to THR’s sources, the studio has hired additional security guards for “some theatres in larger cities.”
The Ice Cube and Dr. Dre produced biopic is slated to do generate $25 to $30 million (USD) when it opens in theatres this weekend.
