Idris Elba stole the show at a London screening of his big-screen directorial debut “Yardie” — although not in the way one might assume.
As the New York Post‘s “Page Six” column reports, the 45-year-old star stunned the crowd at London’s Rio Cinema when he was joined onstage by longtime girlfriend Sabrina Dhowre, surprising both Dhowre and the audience by dropping to one knee and proposing.
The cinema confirmed the proposal on its website, tweeting a photo of Elba with the caption: “Another @riocinema first! Still 5 days to Valentines Day but @idriselba went down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend live on stage this morning before a preview of his film #Yardie.”
A member of the audience captured video of the sweetly romantic moment as Elba dropped to one knee and popped the question, and the crowd erupted into cheers when she said yes.
The “Luther” star and the 29-year-old model from Vancouver (who was crowned Miss Vancouver in 2014) have been together since meeting last year while he filmed “The Mountain Between Us” in B.C. and Alberta.
This will be the actor’s third marriage; Elba was previously married to Hanne “Kim” Norgaard from 1999 until 2003, while his 2006 marriage to Sonya Nicole Hanklin lasted just four months.
Elba is the father of 15-year old daughter Isan, whom he shares with Norgaard, and 3-year-old son Winston, with ex-girlfriend Naiyana Garth.
