Dua Lipa has just entered the record books! At age 22, the British singer, songwriter and model’s video for “New Rules” has surpassed one billion views on YouTube, making her the youngest female artist to ever hit the one-billion mark.
“New Rules”, the sixth single to be released from her self-titled debut, has been watched more than 1,000,000,000 times on YouTube since the video was first posted in July, and Lipa celebrated the milestone in an excited Instagram post.
“I picked up the phone and found out I am the youngest female artist to hit 1 BILLION views on a music video,” she wrote, accompanying a photo of a baby holding a telephone.
In an interview with Billboard, Lipa credited the success of the song — “New Rules became her first top-40 single — to the arresting video.
“Everyone was reposting it and sending it to their friends, and I was just like, ‘What is happening?’” said Lipa of the “New Rules” video. “Like, the views were just soaring, and that’s just never happened before. It was like rocket fuel for the song.”
Watching the video views climb, she added, has “been surreal, and really exciting. I was very excited to shoot the video, because I’d come up with this concept that I was really proud of and that I thought that would be something that would attract people’s attention but it also kind of gave the song a different meaning… I just didn’t expect it to do this. Like, I thought people were gonna like it, but I didn’t think it was gonna become a meme.”
