Jimmy Kimmel was caught on-camera smiling while Fergie sang the American national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, but it was only because he’s a patriot.
The late night host took time during his opening monologue Tuesday to explain his reaction to the former Black Eyed Peas member’s controversially sexy rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.
“I just want to say, the reason I was smiling is because I love the National Anthem so much,” Kimmel joked. “That’s the face I make when I really love a song.”
The host added, “That was some arrangement though. In hindsight, trying to work in the words ‘my humps my humps, my lovely lady lumps’ may have been a mistake.”
Kimmel also decided to cut Fergie some slack over her performance, which she apologized for on Monday. “In Fergie’s defence,” he said, “we don’t know what Francis Scott Key was thinking when he wrote ‘The Star Spangled Banner.’ Maybe he wanted it to be sexy.”
