Steve Wilkos is facing a DUI charge after his involvement in a terrible car crash last month.
People reports the 53-year-old talk show host and former security director for “The Jerry Springer Show” was arrested after turning himself in to police Wednesday.
Wilkos was involved in a single-vehicle crash on January 21; medical reports show he had a blood alcohol content level of 0.29 per cent, over the legal limit at the time of the crash.
Bail was set by the judge at $1,500 and Wilkos was released the same day. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 8.
Wilkos originally told TMZ the accident occurred while he was distracted reaching for his glasses.
On Wednesday, he released a statement to E! News saying, “I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight and share that I was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.”
“Over the course of my life, I have been struggling with bouts of depression and on the day of my accident, I had a complete lapse in judgment which resulted in me drinking and getting behind the wheel of my car,” the statement continued.
“I am lucky and so grateful that no one else was involved in the accident and truly humbled by the outpouring of love and support. This experience reinforces my commitment to get the professional help that I need and I have recently completed an intensive medically supervised program.”
