Jimmy Kimmel stopped by “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Tuesday (February 27) to talk about hosting the Oscars and revealed an embarrassing moment involving Michelle Obama.
For the second year in a row, the late-night talk show host will be presenting the Academy Awards ceremony, which takes place this Sunday in Los Angeles, California. DeGeneres asked Kimmel why he would choose to return to such a stressful job following last year’s Best Picture mixup.
“[The mixup] was not my fault by the way,” Kimmel joked. “Some people think it was a prank I was pulling – not a prank I was pulling. And if it was a prank I was pulling, it would have been on Matt Damon.”
Kimmel said that he was asked to return as host the day after last year’s Oscars ceremony. “I feel like maybe they felt sorry for me because I got caught up in the whole envelope thing, and so I said, ‘yeah, that would be great,’ and next thing you know, here we are.”
The host also touched on his presenting style, noting that anything can happen between now and Sunday. “You do want to be appropriate and respectful, but more importantly, I want to be funny,” Kimmel said in regards to his approach to the event. “I mean, nobody remembers appropriate and respectful.”
Later, DeGeneres talked about how Kimmel surprised her during her 60th birthday show earlier this month when he crashed the set dressed as an Olympic figure skater.
“So after that happened,” Kimmel explained, “I go back to my dressing room and the First Lady Michelle Obama was here. And they said, ‘Mrs. Obama would love to say hello to you,’ which means I have to go in there dressed like that. Top five most embarrassing moments of my life.”
On a more serious note, Kimmel thanked DeGeneres and her viewers for raising $1 million for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles where his baby son, Billy, underwent heart surgery. DeGeneres then revealed a surprise of her own, announcing that a room in the Heart Institute at the hospital Ellen has been named in honor of Billy.
