Kim Kardashian graces the cover of the latest issue of Vogue India, but the magazine is facing backlash online over its choice of cover model.
The reality-tv star features in a double cover for the March issue – in one shot she lays on a bed of roses wearing a low-cut black dress, while in the other she poses in a stunning red ensemble.
However, many are upset that the publication chose an American celebrity in favour of an Indian model, with some accusing Vogue of “whitewashing” South Asian culture.
“India’s vogue should embrace and feature their own south Asian women instead of choosing someone from pop culture,” one Twitter user wrote.
“The fashion industry loves to preach about the importance of diversity & the efforts made towards it but then
@VOGUEIndia will go & put Kim K on its cover,” wrote another.
Kim’s half-sister, Kendall Jenner, faced similar backlash last year after appearing on Vogue India’s May 2017 issue. At the time, the magazine released a statement, defending their decision to feature Jenner as its cover girl.
“In the last 10 years, Vogue India has had only 12 international covers, including Kendall Jenner, in 2017,” the statement read. “Therefore, statistically, 90% of our covers are Indian! And we are proud of that. India has given the world so many beautiful faces to admire. After all, we are Vogue, an international brand, and we want to give the love back by featuring some of the best international celebrities on our covers. Occasionally!”
One person on Twitter also defended the choice of cover star, pointing out the number of times Vogue has featured Indian models.
Others argued that it made sense for Vogue India to capitalize on the Kardashians’ large following.
Inside the magazine, the 37-year-old talked about her family and the qualities she likes most about each of them.
“My brother’s sense of humor. Kendall’s sweetness. Khloé’s I-don’tgive-a-f**k attitude. Kourtney’s savviness around finances. Kylie’s ability to just go for it and not care what other people’s opinions are. And my mom’s nurturing,” she said.
When asked if there are any aspects of their personalities she’d take away, Kardashian said, “Maybe… Kourtney’s stubbornness. And Khloé’s getting too sensitive. I would take away Kendall’s anxiety, Kylie’s “I don’t care, I know what I’m doing” thing and probably my brother’s moodiness.”
However, she revealed she wouldn’t change anything about her mom. “She’s perfect,” she said.
