Oprah Winfrey plays the wise Mrs. Which in the new Disney movie “A Wrinkle In Time” and recently spoke with Vanity Fair about what first attracted her to the role.

“As I read the script, I heard the voices of Maya Angelou and Glinda the Good Witch in my head, and my own stuff that I’ve said, and I thought, Yeah, I could do that,” the media mogul explained.

“A Wrinkle In Time,” which was directed by Ava DuVernay, is based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Madeleine L’Engle. It follows a young girl (played by Storm Reid) who sets off on a quest through time and space to find her father with the help of three mystical beings, played by Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling.

“When they’re [travelling] for the first time and [Mrs. Which] is explaining that it’s… finding your flow, having faith in who you are, well, I’ve said that to my girls a hundred times,” Winfrey told Vanity. “That’s what life is — finding your lane, being able to align with whatever is your real purpose, who you really are, being true to yourself.”

The movie is making history as DuVernay is the first woman of colour to direct a live-action film with a production budget of more than $100 million. The “Selma” filmmaker spoke with Vanity about the importance of the movie, saying, “To see a girl of colour hopping planets and saving the universe is important in the culture, for all kinds of people.”

Winfrey herself is ecstatic to be part of the movie and the influence it could have on young children. “I picture two years from now, a year from now, being someplace and kids recognizing [me] as Mrs. Which,” the 64-year-old actress said, “and their parents saying, ‘No, honey, that’s Oprah.. she used to have a talk show.'”

The legendary talk show host previously told ET, “What I’m really excited about is you can bring your kids to see this movie and feel comfortable, feel relaxed. You’re not going have any kind of disturbance that the kids are going to be upset later, and you can talk about the values that are so entertainingly displayed in this movie.”

“A Wrinkle In Time” had its world premiere last night in Los Angeles, California, and the stars were on hand to celebrate the film’s opening.

The movie opens in theatres March 9. Hear more from the cast in the video below.
