Despite the hype surrounding We Are Your Friends, the Zac Efron-starring movie about an up-and-coming DJ has proven to be an unmitigated bomb at the box office, with an anemic opening-weekend take that lands the film among the lowest-grossing in Hollywood history.
According to figures compiled by website Box Office Mojo, We Are Your Friends raked in a measly US$1.8 million in 2,233 theatres during its first wide-release weekend, becoming the fourth-worst opening weekend ever.
To put in perspective just how awful those numbers are, consider this: films that did better at the box office than We Are Your Friends include such legendary disasters as Eddie Murphy’s The Adventures of Pluto Nash, American Idol-spawned catastrophe From Justin to Kelly and the iconic Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez stinker Gigli, all of which proved to be more popular with moviegoers than Efron’s latest.
Sorry Zac — here’s hoping you have better luck with Baywatch!
