DJ Khaled has brought on board a trio of music heavyweights — Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Future — for his new song “Top Off”, the first single from his upcoming Father of Asahd album.
The new track, which the producer unveiled Friday (March 2), sees Jay-Z and Beyonce handling the verses, while Future contributes to the song’s chorus with the refrain, “I took the top off the Maybach.”
In his verse, Jay gives a shout-out to fellow rapper Meek Mill, who is currently serving a two-to-four-year prison sentence for violating his probation. “I do the whole dash with no seatbelt / Screamin’ ‘Free my n***a Meek Mill’ / N****s can’t wheelie in this free world.”.
The “99 Problems” hitmaker also references Prince and George Zimmerman, the man who killed Trayvon Martin. “Meanwhile Georgie Porgie sinnin’ and sendin’ me threats / Save your breath, you couldn’t beat a flight of steps / Try that s**t with a grown man / I’ll kill that f**kboy with my own hand.”
Later in the song, Jay introduces his wife, telling her, “B, put these f**kboys on notice.” Beyonce declares herself “The only lady here, still the realest n***a in the room,” before singing, “I break the internet, top 2 and I ain’t number 2.”
Like her husband, Bey also lends her support to Meek Mill, saying, “I’m in the hood, hollerin’, ‘Free Meek.'”
Khaled produced the track and as always pops up with his hype-man style ad libs throughout the song.
“Top Off”, which has already shot to the top of the Overall Top Songs and Top Hip-Hop/Rap Songs charts on iTunes, comes just over a year after Khaled teamed with Jay-Z and Beyonce for his 2017 single “Shining”.
The “Wild Thoughts” artist will host the iHeartRadio Awards on March 11, where he is nominated for five awards, including Hip-Hop Artist of the Year.
