Donald Trump sat out the last White House Correspondents’ Dinner, but decided to make an appearance at a similar event on Saturday.
As CNN reports, the president surprised everyone in attendance when he took to the podium at the 2018 Gridiron Dinner on Saturday night and joked about his tumultuous week, which included longtime communications director Hope Hicks tendering her resignation the day after testifying before a congressional investigative committee.
Trump, who has a reputation for being thin-skinned when it comes to negative reports about his presidency, uncharacteristically threw some barbs at himself.
“My staff was concerned that I couldn’t do self-deprecating humour,” Trump said. “And I told them not to worry, nobody does self-deprecating humour better than I do.”
Discussing son-in-law Jared Kutcher losing his security clearance, Trump quipped that he arrived late to the event because “Jared could not get through the security.”
Trump even referenced the spectre of impeachment that looms over the White House due to Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigation into Russian collusion, joking that Vice-President Mike Pence has been showing “a particularly keen interest in the news these days. He starts out each morning asking everyone, ‘Has he been impeached yet?’ Mike, you can’t be impeached when there’s no crime, please remember that.”
First Lady Melania Trump was also on the receiving end of a Trump zinger. Addressing the numerous staffers who have recently departed the White House, Trump said: “So many people have been leaving the White House. It’s actually been really exciting and invigorating ’cause you want new thought. So, I like turnover. I like chaos. It really is good. Now the question everyone keeps asking is, ‘Who is going to be the next to leave? Steve Miller or Melania?’
