Emma Stone followed in Natalie Portman’s footsteps, calling out the Oscars for only nominating one woman for Best Director this year.
Presenting the award, the actress specifically highlighted “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig’s nomination, jabbing the The Academy for the fact that the other four nominees were men.
“It is the vision of the director that takes an ordinary movie and turns it into a work of art,” Stone said. “These four men and Greta Gerwig created their own masterpieces this year.”
The audience in the room reacted loudly to Stone’s comment, with many applauding before she revealed “The Shape of Water” director Guillermo del Toro as the winner.
Many on Twitter celebrated Stone slamming the Oscars for its male-centric directing category, while others commented that her dig at the other nominees was uncalled for, especially given their diversity.
