Frances McDormand won Best Actress Sunday at the Oscars, but she almost lost the statuette itself after the show.
The “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” actress was attending the big Oscars after-party at the Governors Ball when she set her Oscar statuette down, only to have a man pick it up and try to walk away with it. He later posted a video of himself taking the Oscar on Facebook.
Jimmy Kimmel talked about the incident during his show’s monologue on Monday.
“I would rather steal from Mike Tyson than Frances McDormand,” Kimmel joked. “She’ll beat your a**.”
“And what’s the long term plan when you steal an Oscar?” the host wondered. “Do you hope your friends didn’t notice you didn’t win Best Actress in 2018? Wait a minute, that was you in ‘Three Billboards’? You’re amazing!”
A spokesperson for Los Angeles police told The Hollywood Reporter the man, who remains unidentified, has been arrested for the alleged theft.
A New York Times reporter tweeted out a photo of the man who attempted to steal the Oscar.
According to Yahoo! News, the man tried to leave the party, but was stopped by Wolfgang Puck’s photographer.
McDormand also reportedly said to let the man go after he disappeared back into the party.
A representative for the actress confirmed the incident and said, “Fran and Oscar are happily reunited and are enjoying an In-N-Out burger together.”
Fans on Twitter were happy to know McDormand hadn’t lost her Oscar, while also enjoying the absurdity of the incident.
