Katie Holmes covers the April issue of Women’s Health, opening up about being mom to 11-year-old Suri, her daughter with ex-husband Tom Cruise.
The 39-year-old actress admits she finds herself becoming competitive with other mothers when she looks at their social media. “Like, that one has taken her child to Morocco, why haven’t I taken my child to Morocco?” she jokes.
Of course, as InStyle points out, there probably aren’t a lot of those other moms who are starring in and directing a movie, as Holmes did with “All We Had”, which came out in late 2016. Holmes is following that up by stepping behind the camera again for “Rare Objects”, a screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Kathleen Tessaro, in which she’ll also star.
“Some people say, ‘It must be so hard to act and direct at the same time.’ But it’s not as challenging as it looks, because you’re in charge of it,” Holmes explains. “And when you’re a mom — we’re used to doing 25 things at once.”
Holmes credits her own mother for setting the template for the kind of mom she’s striving to be.
“I feel really lucky, because my mom is so creative, and she’s such an artist,” Holmes tells the mag. “I mean, she makes all of the curtains, she makes all the pillows. She made me a homemade sweater. She knows how to do everything. And it’s all, like, just wrapped in love. Growing up I kind of took it for granted, but as I’ve gotten older I see the poetry in that.”
In the interview, Holmes discusses the importance of staying in shape, something that she credits to her daughter.
“Being a parent, every choice I make it with my child in mind,” she says. “So part of getting in shape is to be an example.”
