Series creator David Chase is returning to helm the project, alongside writer Lawrence Konner.

The film, titled “The Many Saints of Newark”, will be set decades before the original series, covering the Newark riots of the 1960s between African-Americans and Italians.

Characters from “The Sopranos”, which ran from 1999 to 2007, will appear in the film, according to Deadline, including Tony Soprano’s father Giovanni, his wife Livia and Tony’s uncle Junior.

Chase will also produce the film and help select a director for the project. His previous feature film as director was 2012’s “Not Fade Away”, which starred the late “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini.
