Selma Blair caused a stir online after she insisted her showbiz pal Cameron Diaz is “done” with the industry. But, fear not Diaz fans, Blair says her comments were taken out of context.
Diaz, 45, who is married to Good Charlotte frontman Benji Madden, 39, was said to have told Blair, also 45, that she’s ready to retire as the pair chatted about their 2002 film “The Sweetest Thing” during a recent get-together.
Speaking at the Vanity Fair Oscar pre-party in Los Angeles, Blair said, according to the Metro: “I had lunch with Cameron the other day. We were reminiscing about the film. I would have liked to do a sequel but Cameron’s retired from acting. She’s like, ‘I’m done.’
“I mean, she doesn’t need to make any more films. She has a pretty great life. I don’t know what it would take to bring her back. She’s happy.”
But now the actress clarifies those comments were meant as a joke.
Blair’s comments came after Diaz spoke about married life in a rare interview with Andy Cohen for SiriusXM back in 2016.
She said, when questioned about all of the “hot guys” she’s previously dated, “It was one of those things where everyone tells you, ‘You just know when you know.’ I was like, ‘What does that mean?’ Oh, I get it. You just know when you know. Like, you’re my husband.”
Diaz continued to say at the time, “The first thing I said when I first met my husband was, ‘He’s hot.’ How come I didn’t know this before? We had never been in the same circle… You know, nothing matters now that I have my husband. Like, I don’t even remember any of that.
“No one compares. Everything else just like washes and slips away. You realize like, ‘Oh this is [what] the real thing is. This is what real love is. This is what real commitment and devotion is. This is the person you build your life with.'”
ET Canada has contacted Diaz’s rep for further comments.
