“American Idol” contestant Benjamin Glaze may not have made it through the audition process, but he did end up with his very first kiss, courtesy of Katy Perry.
The 19-year-old cashier told judges Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan that he had yet to experience his first kiss.
“I’ve never been in a relationship,” he announced. “I can’t kiss a girl without being in a relationship.”
His statement prompted the “I Kissed A Girl” singer to wave Glaze over for a smooch. “Come here, Benjamin. Come here right now!” she directed.
As Glaze went in for a peck on the cheek, Perry turned her head at the last second so he could plant a kiss on her lips.
After the surprise lip-lock with Perry, Glaze had to ask for water, much to the enjoyment of Richie who got up to put his arm around the contestant.
“I kinda wasn’t expecting that,” Glaze said as Richie asked, “Are you gonna be all right, Benjamin? Because that was a major deal. Your first kiss was Katy Perry.”
Unfortunately for Blaze, his vocal chops didn’t past muster with the judges who unanimously declared he needed more practice.
“I really enjoyed meeting you today,” Perry told him. “You gave my heart aflutter. I think you’re really sweet but truthfully, there are just some people that are outsinging you right now and so I don’t think it’d be fair to put you in that kind of competition. Next time, just take your time. I think you were a bit rushed and I think that’s because I sped up your BPM of the heartbeat.”
