It may have taken place nearly a year-and-a-half ago, yet that bizarre incident in which Azealia Banks was kicked out of a party in Russell Crowe’s hotel suite continues to stir up controversy.
For those who may forgotten the whole thing, back in October 2016 Banks was attending Crowe’s shindig as a guest of former Wu Tang Clan member RZA, when something happened that led her to be forcibly removed from the suite. As to what exactly happened, that’s a bit murky; Banks claims that the “Gladiator” star choked her, spat at her and called her the N-word, while witnesses such as comedian Jim Jefferies have disputed her account, with Jefferies taking to Twitter to call Banks “a complete liar” who was “out of control” when she was booted from Crowe’s suite.
For reasons unknown, rapper Vince Staples decided to revisit the incident in a pair of tweets he issued on Sunday, declaring himself firmly in Banks’ corner.
In his tweets, Staples references Crowe spitting at Banks, implying Crowe has not suffered any repercussions due to racism. “Y’all let Russell Crowe spit at Azealia Banks but it Tyler Perry spit at Taylor Swift it would be no more Medeas [sic] movies,” he wrote in all caps, adding, “LOL but I’m serious.”
Banks responded to Staples’ assessment, commenting on his tweets.
“Crazy… all Kanye did was say excuse me then take Taylor’s mic (which she handed him) and they damn near cancelled him,” wrote Banks. “Crowe choked me, spat on me, called me a [N-word] and is still being booked for work. It’s insane that he really got away with that.”
