Following a week of speculation regarding his health, Indian actor Irrfan Khan has revealed he has been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour.

The “Life of Pi” star had previously disclosed he was suffering from a “rare disease” and had promised to share more information after a “conclusive diagnosis.”

On Friday, the 51-year-old actor returned to Twitter to update his fans and supporters, revealing the tumour diagnosis.

“Learning that I have been diagnosed with NeuroEndocrine Tumour as of now has admittedly been difficult,” Khan wrote. “But the love and strength of those around me and that I found within me has brought me to a place of hope.”

Khan, who has also starred in Hollywood hits “Slumdog Millionaire” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” said that he will be leaving India and travelling overseas for treatment.

The actor also dismissed rumours published by Indian media that speculated he was suffering from brain cancer. “Neuro is not always about the brain,” he explained. “Googling is the easiest way to do research.”

According to the NHS UK website, “A neuroendocrine tumour is a rare tumour that can develop in many different organs of the body. It affects the cells that release hormones into the bloodstream.” The tumours can be cancerous or non-cancerous and often grow very slowly.

It is not yet clear where Khan will be travelling to to undergo treatment.
