Benedict Cumberbatch is struggling with his inner demons in this extended clip from his new limited series for Showtime, “Patrick Melrose”.

“Sherlock” star Cumberbatch is the titular Melrose, an addict who struggles to overcome the damage that has been inflicted upon him by his abusive father (Hugo Weaving) and the mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who condoned his behaviour. The series will follow Patrick on his odyssey from his traumatic childhood in the 1960s to his damaged life as an adult on his way to recovery in the early 2000s.

The newly released clip builds on what the trailer teased, showing Patrick at war with the voices in his head as he appears to come down from a heroin high at a fancy restaurant, much to the confusion of wait staff.

Based on the semi-autobiographical Patrick Melrose novels by author Edward St Aubyn, each episode will tackle one of the books in its entirety.

In addition to Cumberbatch, who will also serve as executive producer, the series will feature Blythe Danner, Allison Williams, Dainton Anderson, Holliday Grainger, and Jessica Raine.

The five-part series premieres on May 12.
