Cory Michael Smith has more in common with his character in the upcoming movie “1985” than you make think.
The “Gotham” star opened up about his sexuality in an interview with The Daily Beast ahead of the SXSW premiere of his new drama.

“1985” tells the story of Smith’s character Adrian travelling back to his family home after his same-sex partner dies from an AIDS-related illness. And as Smith puts it, there is something very interesting about playing a character he more closely relates too.
“There’s something special about telling a story that feels closer to home. I’m not exactly like The Riddler in real life,” said the “Gotham” actor. “I’m from Ohio. I’ve been living here [in New York] for a while, and there are stretches when I don’t see my family often.”

Continuing, “Going home and that whole charade is very familiar. The first family dinner after a while. Coming out to a family, the fear of that.”
Smith, 31, said despite taking a “lot of time,” he was met with “a lot of love” when coming out to those close to him.
