Nearly 45 years after director William Friedkin first terrorized audiences with his big screen adaptation of “The Exorcist”, the director claims to have finally captured real demonic possession on screen in his new documentary.

“The time I directed the film ‘The Exorcist’, I had never seen the real thing,” he narrates in the trailer for “The Devil And Father Amorth”.

But who exactly is Father Amorth? He’s a Catholic priest and the Vatican’s official exorcist who invited Friedkin to witness a real-life exorcism.

“I had no idea what to expect,” the 82-year-old Friedkin teases in the trailer, as he promises audiences that the events caught on camera are not fiction. With interviews from medical and religious experts, Friedkin says the events he experienced are “different from the movies.”

A smash with critics and audiences alike when it debuted in 1973, “The Exorcist” was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning two. Its cultural impact has been significant over the nearly five decades since its original release and remained the highest-grossing horror film of all time, until September 2017 when it was finally dethroned by “It”.
