The Junos honoured the late Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie on Sunday.
Singers Kevin Drew and Pearl Wenjack introduced two covers, including an emotional cover of the band’s classic “Bobcaygeon” in tribute to the singer, who died last year after a battle with cancer at age 53.
Barenaked Ladies’ Kevin Hearn and Sarah Harmer performed “Introduce Yerself” from Downie’s last solo album of the same name, released posthumously last year. Then City & Colour’s Dallas Green, later joined by Sarah Harmer, performed an acoustic cover of “Bobcaygeon”.
Before the tribute performance, a short documentary from concert doc “Long Time Running” directors Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier played in which Canadians from around the country said in one word what Downie meant to them.
Later in the show, Gord Downie was posthumously honoured with the biggest award of the night: Artist of the Year. Downie’s brothers accept the award on his behalf.
On Friday, Downie was also awarded Adult Alternative Album of the Year.
