Prepare to buckle up in the Wagon Queen Family Truckster and hit the road for Wally World, because a Broadway musical is in the works based on “National Lampoon’s Vacation”.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the rights to the iconic big-screen comedy have been optioned by Davenport Theatricals, which plans to develop a musical based on the Chevy Chase-starring franchise, which also includes “National Lampoon’s European Vacation”, “Christmas Vacation” and “Vegas Vacation”.
As EW reports, Ken Davenport and Kurt Deutsch are in the midst of developing the musical in partnership with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, and explain that the new project won’t be a remake of the existing films but more like a sequel.

“Both Kurt and I came of age on the ‘Vacation’ films series and can’t wait to bring the Griswolds to Broadway,” said Davenport in a statement. “If audiences thought their cinematic misadventures were funny, wait till Clark and his family get to Times Square.”
The upcoming musical — tentatively titled “Broadway Vacation” — would follow the Griswold clan as they make their first trip to New York City, where they embark on a wacky musical adventure in the city’s famed theatre district.

“Millions of tourists come to New York for the first time every year and each one has a singular experience,” added Deutsch in his statement. “The Griswolds’ maiden trip to the city will be no exception, though in this case, theirs is guaranteed to be outrageous, unique, hilarious – and well-choreographed. While the characters are familiar, ‘Broadway Vacation’ will take them on a completely original musical journey – and on a trip to New York that they will never forget.”
Davenport also confirmed the news via Twitter:
This isn’t the first time that Davenport has produced a musical based on a beloved big-screen comedy; Davenport Theatricals was also behind the Tony-nominated Broadway adaptation of the Bill Murray classic “Groundhog Day”.
