‘Love, Simon’ Author Responds To Fans Who Think Gay Character Should Have Ended Up With A Girl

Some moviegoers who have seen critically acclaimed gay teen rom-com “Love, Simon” seem to think the title character — a closeted gay teen played by Nick Robinson — is actually bisexual, and really should have ended up with his female best friend, Leah.

In fact, some of the more ardent holders of this particular point of view have taken to social media to let their opinions be known.

The writer of the novel upon which the film is based, however, is pouring cold water on that idea, with Love, Simon author Becky Albertalli tweeting her surprise that people are seeking confirmation that the gay character she created is actually gay.

In a series of subsequent tweets, Albertalli spelled it out even more clearly.

She further explained that “if you ship [Simon] with Leah, you are not going to like LEAH ON THE OFFBEAT,” referencing her upcoming sequel focusing on Simon’s pal Leah.

One of Albertalli’s Twitter followers backed her up, by sharing a passage from the book that spells it out pretty explicity:
