The Weeknd just released new music and fans pouring over the lyrics already have theories about who some of the songs might be about.
Two of the songs from the Canadian singer’s “My Dead Melancholy,” have gained attention for lyrics possibly referring to his recent exes, with fans speculating that “Wasted Time” is about Bella Hadid and “Call Out My Name” is about Selena Gomez.
“You were equestrian, so ride it like a champion,” The Weeknd sings in “Wasted Time”, and some are taking that as a reference to 21-year-old model Hadid, who used to compete at horse riding events.
“But you’ve been with me from the beginnin’ (ooh, yeah, yeah) / And I know right now that we’re not talkin’ (not talkin’),” the 28-year-old sings at another point, which some believe refers to rumours that he and Hadid had been hanging out again after his breakup with Gomez.
Some also took the song as a knock on Gomez herself.
On “Call Out My Name” The Weeknd sings, “We found each other / I helped you out of a broken place / You gave me comfort / But falling for you was my mistake.”
Many are reading the lyrics as blasting Gomez. The two broke up last year.
At another point in the track he sings, “I said I didn’t feel nothing baby, but I lied / I almost cut a piece of myself for your life,” which some believe refers to Gomez’s kidney transplant and suggests he was willing to donate his own kidney.
“Guess I was just another pit stop / Til’ you made up your mind / You just wasted my time,” The Weeknd adds, with many seeing that as a reference to Gomez possibly getting back together with Justin Bieber.
