While appearing at the Alameda County Superior Court in California over a suit by one of his patients alleging negligence, SFGate reports, Lilja jumped to the aid of a man going through jury selection who went into cardiac arrest, hit his head and collapsed.

Lilja performed CPR on the man, as well as shocking him with a defibrillator with the help of his nurse assistant, keeping the man alive until paramedics took over and transported him to hospital.

The judge later agreed to a motion by the plaintiff’s lawyer to declare a mistrial due to possible prejudice from the jury pool. The new trial date has been set for April 2.

Lilja was a founding member of The Offspring, but left the band in 1980 to pursue a career as an OB-GYN. The 51-year-old graduated from UCLA with a degree in microbiology in 1988.
